Degree Requirements

SOCIOLOGY MAJOR
The sociology major requires a total of thirty class hours in sociology. Fifteen of the thirty class hours are required courses which give students a broad perspective on the discipline.

Required courses:
Soc 131 (introductory sociology)
Soc 232 (social statistics) (offered fall and spring)
Soc 395 (research methods) (offered every fall)
Soc 462 (sociological theory) (offered every fall)
Soc 470 (capstone seminar) (offered every spring)

The remaining fifteen hours in the major (twelve of which must be upper division) can be completed by selecting sociology classes that interest you. Options include courses on sexuality, family, environment, religion, gender, race, and more. Internships are also available! For a detailed listing of the classes offered in Sociology consult the University catalog here (see page 200).

SOCIOLOGY MINOR
We also offer a minor in Sociology which can be completed by successfully taking Soc 131 plus fifteen hours of sociology electives (twelve of which must be upper division). You can also overlap those hours with Gen-ed courses to make your time at EKU more efficient. For example, taking Soc 131 (intro sociology) Soc 205 (sexualities) and Soc 399 (gender in society) all fulfill minor and gen-ed requirements.

Sociology also works great as a second major! Students can complete sociology as a second major while completing the electives required by the university. This means students won't have to delay graduation!
